White Ermine Moth Caterpillar

White Ermine Moth Caterpillar in Scotland

From what I can see online, this is the White Ermine Moth Caterpillar. It was crawling along the ground. Caterpillars can be fast moving at times!

  1. Hi, Ananka: I have no great familiarity with European Moths, but all of the references I have state that the caterpillar of this species is not seen until July. When did you see this one? The adult moth begins flight in May, but obviously at that stage it has not laid eggs, let alone had them hatch and progress to what looks like a late instar. From the pictures I have seen it does resemble a White Ermine Moth Caterpillar, but there are other fuzzy caterpillars too.

  5. Caterpillars transform from ugly to beautiful, that's how Mother Nature acts wisely.

  11. I've also notice they can really move fast. This is an interesting look for a caterpillar...very bushy.
