Ankle Update

Zimmer and moonboot in Scotland

Cleo photobombed the photo on the right!

I had my big appointment at the hospital yesterday. They x-rayed my ankle and then had my appointment with the surgeon. It was good news. The breaks are healing really well and I don't need the moonboot or zimmer frame anymore. He said I need to start walking properly now and I don't really need to use the crutches in the house but must use them outside. He also advised not to wear any ankle supports or the likes. Keep it moving and work with the physio. He did say I'd have the pins and plates in for life, unless they cause me any issues down the line. I see him again in aboout 8 weeks and that might be my last appointment.

This next bit caused me some grief though and I am glad my friend was there to offer his support. The surgeon went through all the x-rays from day one when it happened and explained it all. Oh my goodness, it was a really, really bad one. I had broken bones in 3 parts and a segmented break in the fibula, that's why I have that big plate holding it together. The tibia was also badly damaged and the ankle ball was fully out of the socket. My foot was basically hanging off. No wonder my main operation lasted so long. Now all that said, I think I've come a long way in the 12 weeks to be able to walk again.

It's just a case of keep it moving and get out walking short distances at first and build up to long distances and to be extra careful. I really hope muscle memory kicks in as I used to do a lot of walking.

Thanks again to everyone for your lovely and positive comments, it really did mean a lot to me and kept me going.

  2. I am glad you are doing so well and can now start on strengthening your leg. The breaks sound very similar to mine from 20 years ago this month. I have 9 pins, and a large plate in my tibia and a smaller one in my fibula. I also had a screw put right through my ankle to keep it in the socket. That was removed, but the surgeon put the fear of God in me by telling me if I broke the screw it would be a big operation to retrieve the pieces. Needless to say, I was very careful!
I hope you continue to do well.

    1. Me too. Yes I have that screw right through me ankle too. It does so very similar. My surgeon said that if my screw broke they would just leave mine in and high chance it will! I am at the nervous stage still. And see hazards everywhere! Thanks Jackie :-D

Yes, you have come a long way in the 12 weeks to be able to walk again. Just keep moving and get out walking short distances to start with then slowly building up the distance, but always be careful.

I'm smiling for you and I'm sure you are too :)

    All the best Jan

    1. Thanks David, slowly but surely! I am so excited, I am really looking forward to it.

I slipped going down a grassy verge...leg went one way and foot the other way. It was horrific. I really cannot remember if I posted about it, I don't think I did.

  22. Hello, my dear Ananka, I haven't been here for a while. Sorry, but I've been busy with school and therapy.
I'm so glad you're recovering. That you can now walk at home without crutches.
You need to take care of yourself now so that the rehabilitation can completely heal your fractures, which were very serious.

I'm really glad you're recovering and I wish you a complete recovery with your leg!

Best regards, and have a great new week.
