This is a Vapourer Moth Caterpillar also know as Rusty Tussock. It was on a lamp post and I just had to save it. I got a leaf from the ground, as it is unwise to touch caterpillars, and got it on the leaf then popped it onto the tree. It would have a better chance of surviving that way, I thought. I have never seen one of these caterpillars before and was glad to see something new!
...you are quite the entomologist!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tom. I really should look into studying it!
DeleteAren't caterpillars of all kinds beautiful? They are just the little sneak preview of the beautiful moths and butterflies to come.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly are :-D I agree. Thanks :-D
DeleteBoa tarde de segunda-feira e uma excelente semana. Obrigado pela visita e comentário. Algumas realmente são lindas. Mais não toque nelas. No Brasil temos algumas com venenos potentes e que podem matar uma pessoa.
ReplyDeleteYes some are poisonous over too. Best not to touch any! Thanks Luiz :-D
Deleteand the caterpillar is very thankful.
ReplyDeleteI am sure it was, thanks Bill :-D
DeleteWell done!
ReplyDeleteIt must be caterpillar season, I found some on my plants, basil, chillies and mint. Also small moths. I have left them because I have more than I can consume.
You are lucky to have so many plants. My basil, chillies and others didn't grow this year. My mint and lavender did well though! Thanks Fernando :-D
DeleteTe debe su vida y ella no se ha dado cuenta.

DeleteA good thing to do--- Nice pictures, too.
ReplyDeleteIt is Bill. And always have to get a photo of too! Thanks :-D
DeleteYou are brave!
ReplyDeleteThanks Irina :-D
DeleteBravo, Ananka. We need to rescue more caterpillars. We raise butterflies and moths each year, but when we bring the eggs or larvae indoors we are removing critical food for birds and parasitoid wasps. Who knows what’s the right thing to do?
ReplyDeleteIt is such a good question David. Both birds and wasps are important too and the caterpillars are part of the food chain. Yet both moths are butterflies are important as well. Feed the birds some seeds and supply food for the wasps!
DeleteGreat job!
ReplyDeleteLooks very pretty. :)
Thanks :-D
DeleteWell done :)
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
